Panther Attack - 1878
05/09/2012

When The Ouachita Telegraph reprinted this tragedy - July 5, 1878 - from a Catahoula News article, Catahoula Parish included most all of today’s LaSalle Parish, so this event could have taken place around Jena, Eden or even Tullos.

------------------

Panther Attack
A most horrible story comes to us from the Western part of our parish. A lady was attacked and killed by a panther. It seems the unfortunate victim had started to a neighbor's house nearby, and in passing through a skirt of woods was attacked by the hideous and dangerous animal. Her husband, becoming uneasy at her long absence, went in search of his wife and when he reached the scene he found the panther devouring its prey. The husband fired at the panther but without effect. The body of the lady was much mutilated.
