The National Guard moved two bulldozers to the replica’s location Wednesday.
Thursday morning James Construction Group began loading trucks and moving the old bridge ramp dirt, which is part of the Great Mound remains, to the replica’s location. Working all day, approximately 1,000 cubic yards of dirt has been deposited on site with bulldozers continually moving and shaping it.
In addition to bulldozers the National Guard moved a sheep-foot onsite, which will be used to compact the dirt as well as helping to dry the very damp soil.
National Guard personal estimate it will take approximately five days to move all the dirt and shape it into the Great Mound’s original appearance.
Archaeologist Joe Saunders was on site watching the base of the replica slowly rise and he took elevation measurements. He estimated the first day of work brought the first step of the replica to a height of four feet.
