HIGH SCHOOL PEP
Vol. 1 No. 13
April 13, 1923

Catahoula Bank was established in 1902. Capt. J. W. Swayze was the first President of this bank.

The next few years were spent by the people in trying to obtain a public school building. They succeeded in the undertaking in 1905. This building burned in Feb. 1909. Another building was built in 1911.

In the early part of the year 1911 the survey of the L. & A. Railroad passed through Jonesville, a hope of a railroad which was not realized until 1913, the work being delayed by the disastrous flood of 1912. This flood destroyed much property and cast a gloom over the people of Jonesville and the surrounding country, as this was the first water to go over the town since that of 1890. With the coming of the railroad enterprises developed in the shape of an ice plant and numerous sawmills. The dropping of price of lumber caused the mills to stop running and thus cast another gloomy spell over many of the citizens of Jonesville.

In 1915, Mr. Am M. Whipple, the principle of the Jonesville school succeeding in getting this school on the State High School list. Much praise goes to Mr. Whipple for his work among the pupils of Jonesville High School.

The Jonesville Booster, a very widely circulated weekly paper, owned then by Mr. T. W. Parish, now owned by Mr. F. G. Phillips, was first published in 1916.

With the further development of the town came the sidewalls in 1919.

In 1921, Mr. Block donated lots for the construction of a new $75,000.00 brick school building. In honor of Mr. Block the school was named Block High School. Before the building was completed a flood swept over the town and thus the work was prolonged. Along with the completion of the school came the erection of a new brick drug store owned by Mr. L. Yancy. Further progress brought the construction of a first class, up to date garage(1), owned by the Oliphant brothers. Along with this came the work of the model roads.

The last thing in the history of Jonesville is the fact that a radio outfit (2) is being installed by Mr. H.M. Wheeler.
